Winning a block party “rap” contest in 1991 was all it took for Smoke Brown (Dave Penn) to fall in love with music. Influenced by Rakim, Nas, Biggie, Snoop, and Common, Smoke began to write and surround himself with the movement that many call the best era in hip hop.

In 2002, Smoke made the move to Atlanta, GA to pursue a music career. After completing his first album, Strugglin’, he was unexpectedly forced to return home without ever releasing the underground classic. Back in home, Smoke, Bam, Lood, Red, and Eazi created The Evolutionary Souljahs. In 2007 the group of friends released their first album The Experience. A year later, Smoke released the timeless album Wakin’ Up.

When asked about his style, Smoke humbly remarks, “I’m a 28 year old suburbanite that loves music. Hip Hop is the tool I use to paint pictures. If you know me as a person, and have listened to my music, then you know the love is authentic." Finishing his 3 solo album, and also working on Evo Soul’s 2 album, the future definitely looks promising for the Country Club Hills emcee.
